Chiffon Fabric by the Metre: Printed Polyester Chiffon and What to Make

Painterly Hydrangea Floral by Wildfig designs, a watercolour print for chiffon

The Fabric Shop |

Chiffon is the fabric that floats. Light, sheer and soft, it turns a print into something airy: a scarf that catches the breeze, sleeves that move, an overlay that softens a dress.

Ours is a polyester chiffon, printed to order by the metre. Here is what it is like, what to make with it, how much to buy and three habits that make it easy to sew.

Finely twisted yarns give it a soft, slightly textured hand and a drape that floats. We print it by sublimation, the method made for polyester: heat takes the dye into the fibre, so colour is bright and the fabric stays as light as before.

Watercolour florals and painterly prints look especially beautiful on it.

Questions

Chiffon questions

What is polyester chiffon?

A light, sheer plain weave made from finely twisted polyester yarns. Our Chiffon is 72 GSM and 145cm wide. It floats like silk chiffon, holds its shape and creases far less.

Is chiffon see-through?

Yes, that is its charm. Wear it as a scarf, a sleeve or an overlay, or line it for a dress or skirt.

How much chiffon do I need for a scarf?

1m makes two 70cm square scarves or one 90cm square. 2m makes two long scarves of 180 × 50cm.

How do I care for printed chiffon?

Cool, gentle machine wash or hand wash, then line dry. Iron on low heat, from the back.

Can I see the print on chiffon first?

Yes. Order a 25 × 25cm swatch of any design on Chiffon, or the Base Fabrics Pack to compare it with our other sheers.
