Quilting fabric by the metre gives you the freedom to plan a quilt around the prints you love. A medium weight cotton that presses flat and holds a seam is the place to start.
Here is what to buy for the top, the back and the binding, and how much of each.
The best fabric for quilting

Signature Cotton
A medium weight plain weave and our first choice for quilting. It presses flat and keeps a crisp seam.
Use it for every print in the top, so all the pieces behave the same.
Mixing prints with confidence
One feature print
Start with the print you love most. It sets the colours for the rest.
Two or three blenders
Small prints, stripes or dots that pick up a colour from the feature.
One quiet print
A near-solid gives the eye somewhere to rest between busy blocks.
Check the scale
Mix one large, one medium and one small scale so each print stands out.

How much fabric for a quilt
A throw is about 130 x 160 cm and a single bed quilt about 150 x 210 cm. Backing is wider than our fabric, so it is joined from two lengths with the seam across the quilt: 3 m for a throw, 3.5 m for a single bed. Orders start at 1 m, so add the binding to a print you are already buying.

Quilting fabric questions
What is the best fabric for quilting?
A medium weight 100% cotton of around 150 GSM. Signature Cotton is our first choice.
Can I buy quilting fabric by the metre in Australia?
Yes. Every design is printed to order by the metre, from 1 m in 0.5 m steps, and shipped across Australia.
Should I pre-wash quilting fabric?
It is a choice. Wash first if you are mixing fabrics. Skip it if you like the crinkled look a quilt gets after its first wash.
How much fabric do I need for a throw quilt?
About 2 to 2.5 m for the top, 3 m for a joined backing and 0.5 m for the binding.
